Nominations for new Board of Directors

The Anusara School of Hatha Yoga is undergoing many exciting and significant changes! Guided by ASHY’s new vision, mission, and core values, ASHY is in the process of transitioning from a privately-held corporation (“S-corp”) to a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. For those who are unfamiliar with American nonprofit organizations, it is important to note that this designation means that the organization is driven by its mission, not by the pursuit of profits. However, it will need to generate enough revenue to sustain and expand its services and benefits.

An inaugural Board of Directors will be appointed by ASHY’s new Nominating Committee. Board members will serve for a one-year term, starting this November. ASHY’s inaugural Board will play a very important role in determining the organization’s future. It will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring ASHY’s financial sustainability
  • Adopting bylaws (which are required of all nonprofits in the USA)
  • Setting guiding principles and policy
  • Hiring an Executive Director or leadership team
  • Determining all the details regarding the election of new Board members during 2017

Through their work on the Board, Board members will have unique opportunities within ASHY to recognize the sacred at the individual, community, and organizational level.

Nominations are currently closed for the incoming Board of Directors.  Thank you to everyone who participated by nominating others or themselves.  The nominated slate will be presented to the Steering Committee meeting in September and announced by October 1.

Questions? Please contact any member of the Nominating Committee. If you email us, let us know if you would like to talk by phone.

Given all the changes taking place, ASHY’s Operations Team has empowered the Nominating Committee to review all nominations and propose a slate of Board members to ASHY’s Steering Committee. Once the Board is in place by Samavesha this November, the Nominating Committee and the Steering Committee will dissolve. Members of this inaugural Board will then determine who will serve—either by appointment or election—after their one-year term has ended.

The Nominating Committee has determined the following details regarding the new Board:

  1. The Board ideally will have 12-15 members.
  1. Board members selected through this nomination process will only serve a one-year term. They may serve for another term if they elected or selected to do so.
  1. This inaugural Board will be a volunteer board, but it can determine if future Board members should receive compensation and/or reimbursement for travel if needed.
  1. The Board will be a mix of Anusara-licensed teachers and non-teachers who together have the skills and experience ASHY needs.
  1. Ideally, the Board will represent all of ASHY’s global regions: Asia/Pacific, Canada, Europe/Middle East/Africa, Latin America, and the USA.
  1. Qualifications to serve on the Board include:
    • A commitment to the Anusara method and ASHY’s growth
    • Adherence to ASHY’s core values and philosophy
    • Alignment with ASHY’s emerging organizational culture, which includes decision-making by consensus and conflict resiliency and resolution
    • Participation in some form (in-person or electronic) in the Board orientation and leadership development session that will take place immediately prior to Samavesha (November 2016)
    • Availability to devote at least 8-10 hours a month for one year on ASHY Board work including:
      • Actively participate in monthly Board meetings via conference call and Board work between meetings
      • Help with fundraising
      • Serve on at least one Board committee or ASHY team (e.g. Community Relations Team, Communications Team)
  1. While individual Board members are not expected to possess all of the skills listed below, the Board as a whole will reflect a rainbow of skills, including but not limited to:
    • Fundraising
    • Financial management
    • Governance (preferably of a nonprofit organization)
    • Policy development
    • Human Resource management
    • Leadership development
    • Marketing, public relations, and networking
    • Conflict resolution and/or mediation
    • Knowledge of Tantric philosophy/spiritual teachings
    • Visionary thinking

These points only apply to the inaugural Board. It will be up to that Board to determine which of these points, if any, will apply in the future. That will be determined as part of the Board’s review of ASHY’s bylaws.
