Yoga Bio

I was not always a yoga teacher. I graduated from UCLA and worked for over 12 years in the corporate world, including 7 years at Verizon Wireless. In 2002, I sustained a shoulder injury in the gym. As an alternative to lifting weights, I decided to try yoga. After one class, I realized that yoga offered much more than just a great workout. I quickly migrated out of the gym and into local yoga studios. Yoga quickly became my primary training for body, mind, and spirit.

In my first year of practice, I studied a variety of different yoga styles. I discovered Anusara Yoga in 2003 and immediately decided to dedicate myself to this heart-opening practice. Anusara Yoga blends a life-affirming Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness with Universal Principles of Alignment. I started teaching yoga in 2006 and became a Certified Anusara Yoga Teacher in 2010. I am also an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher at the 500-Hour Level (ERYT-500) with Yoga Alliance and owner of Urth Yoga in Los Angeles, California.

I am also a ‘certified’ geek. I love comic books, video games, television, movies, and Star Wars. I am not a vegetarian. I don’t drive an electric car. I like mixing cocktails and I enjoy working out with weights. I sometimes miss the corporate world. I am really just a regular guy, who loves to practice and teach yoga. I believe that there is a hero in all of us and yoga can unleash the full potential of our spiritual ‘powers’ within! In my teaching, I strive to be creative and fun, helping students take their practices off of the mat and into their daily lives.

What do you love most about Anusara Yoga?

There are so many things that I love about Anusara Yoga and my favorites are changing all the time. But for right now…

(1) I love the non-dual philosophy and how it colors every part of my practice, my teaching, and my life. I really strive to see everything as spirit. All people. All religions. All types of yoga. All students. All teachers. We are all spirit taking on different forms, and shapes, and expressions. All forms are not equal. There is difference and diversity and we should celebrate that. But one person’s view is no more or less spirit than another person’s view. I know this is not an easy concept to grasp for everyone, but it is essential to Anusara yoga and one of the things that I love most.

(2) Anusara is truly about balance. The balance between being active and passive. The balance between drawing and being very strong and stretching out and being very flexible. We work hard and play hard. AND we rest and restore and take care of ourselves. We do big asana poses and we quietly meditate or rest in a restorative pose. We chant and sing and study and play. We are reflections of the Divine. She seeks to experience everything in the Universe and so do we.

(3) Finally, I deeply connect with the structure of Anusara and the infinite freedom to express myself as a yoga student, teacher, and human being, both on and off of my yoga mat. I think many people think that Anusara yoga is “cookie cutter” yoga, that all Anusara students and teachers do the same practice and teach the same way. They are wrong. Anusara provides an elegant architecture to explore the human body, mind, and spirit. Anusara teachers are different and diverse. No two Anusara classes are the same. Each class is a reflection of the teacher and students. No two Anusara teachers teach the same way. Anusara teachers are not forced to use specific language. They are not forced to chant an invocation. They have the freedom to choose. And most Anusara teachers choose to teach amazing classes within the structure of the Universal Principles of Alignment (because they work) and with Tantric philosophy as the backdrop of their classes (because it is uplifting).

Why do you teach Anusara yoga?

I teach Anusara yoga because the practice has deeply changed my life over the past two decades. Anusara yoga may not be for everyone, but it is what worked for me and I want to share the practice with others. I want to teach others what changed my life, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Anusara yoga is what I know and love. Anusara yoga is what I teach.

Why do you license with Anusara?

I choose to license with Anusara every year for a few different reasons. (1) Anusara yoga changed my life for the better. Anusara yoga continues to make my life better. I choose to be a licensed teacher out of gratitude for everything that Anusara yoga has given me over the years, knowledge, experience, friendship, community, family, and connection. (2) I worked hard to obtain my licensing status with the Anusara School of Hatha Yoga. I have completed countless hours of study. I work hard to teach classes that meet Anusara’s highest standards. I license as an acknowledgement of my hard work and commitment to the Anusara method. (3) Finally, licensing with Anusara is my way of standing up and being counted among a vast network of amazing Anusara yoga teachers. It is my way of taking a stand beside my Anusara brothers and sisters and saying that Anusara is something important, something that I believe in. I am proud to call myself an Anusara yoga teacher. Licensing gives me the ability to put it in writing on my Website, in social media, on business cards, etc. I want to call myself an Anusara yoga teacher and licensing with the school allows me to do just that!
