As our transition to a non-profit organization progresses, a Nominating Committee was formed and charged with the task of sorting through over 70 nominations to identify a slate of nominees for Steering Committee approval. The objective was to find unity in diversity, including: a mix of Anusara teachers and students along with representation from ASHY’s international regions and a “rainbow of skills”. Now meet our new Board of Directors:
ROYCE BATTLEMAN, from West Harrison, New York, has been a student of Anusara yoga for more than 13 years. She says, “I have worked hard to bring my life into alignment with the values I believe to be at the core of the Anusara philosophy, including an appreciation of the diving spirit that lives in everyone and a desire to bring grace to all my activities”. A Harvard-trained lawyer, she has been with HBO for 20 years. She is also the creator of www.zenunderten.com which uses creative ways to introduce the benefits of yoga and mindfulness/meditation practices to school-aged students. Royce has also served on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Bloomington School of Music.
BENJAMIN FINNERTY is a Certified Anusara teacher in Shanghai, China. He has been serving on ASHY’s Steering Committee, which will be helpful in the transition. He brings experience of working with non-profit groups and on many committees. He has been building Anusara in China since 2008. China’s growth is evidenced by for the largest number of Elements teachers in any region of the world. He has been studying leadership development for the past several years.
You may recognize DESIREE EASTHAM because of her many posts on Facebook for ASHY. An Anusara-Inspired teacher, she has been leading the social media presence for the School. She says, “I first read about Anusara Yoga in a 2004 Yoga Journal article and was mesmerized by the beautiful forms of the Anusara yogini. She was lit up from the inside and it showed in the smile on her face and in every cell.” She serves on the Board of Whole Life Whole Yoga, a non-profit organization that brings yoga to special groups with physical challenges and developmental disabilities.
ADOLFO FERNANDEZ SAURI is an Anusara-Inspired teacher who has owned a yoga studio in Mexico City for several years. He is one of four incorporators (along with Doc Savage, Peter Goodman and Alessandra di Prampero) listed on ASHY’s new Articles of Incorporation. Consequently, he is familiar with how the new non-profit is intended to work. He told us, “ASHY is leading us to be more authentic humans. That’s what I think the world needs the most.” He has recently moved to New Jersey, USA, shortly where he will network with many Anusara yogis and yoginis.
CHRISTINA FU is a dedicated student of Anusara yoga in Shanghai, China. She volunteers for ASHY, helps to translate the website into Chinese and handles ASHY’s finances in China. She has fundraising experience through her service to a non- governmental association to support pupils in a poor area of China. She gained policy-setting experience while working at Pure Apparel and Givenchy Cosmetics. Her marketing expertise was built through work as Advertising Director and Regional Sales Manager at Hachette Filipacchi Media China, Trade Marketing Management at LVMH Fragrance Brand and China Marketing Manager for Pure Apparel. She studied public relations at Shenzhen University and worked in PR at an associate company of Hill & Knowlton.
MARIA GRAZIA ORLANDO, an Anusara-Inspired teacher in Albinea (RE), Italy, was nominated by 22 people! Some of her nominators’ accolades included, “She has a clear heart and is in service of love and greater community,” “She is an amazing organizer and a very reliable person…” “…able to make people work together successfully.” She has been instrumental in building the Italian kula (community of the heart) through teacher gatherings, translation of teacher training manuals and development of the Italian website. Through her work starting up a business, she has human resources management experience.
One of CHRISTEL MEULEBROECK’s nominators said, “Christel cares deeply about her practice and is dedicated to carrying out what is needed to grow. Her kula is a lovely reflection of her great sense of humor and lovely heart.” A student in teacher training in Kortrijk, Belgium, she is weaving in Anusara teachings at the studio she owns. Being a studio owner, she is well versed in financial management, marketing, public relations and networking. She gained human resources management skills while working in her parents’ textile/jeans business.
AIDA PONCE DEL CASTILLO is a student in teacher training from Tervuren, Belgium. Born in Mexico, she has a PhD in law and is working on monitoring European Union legislation in health and safety as head of her department in a European Research Institute. She brings the skills of financial management, governance, human resources development, policy development, conflict resolution and leadership development to the ASHY Board.
WILLIAM “DOC” SAVAGE will be our “connective tissue” (to quote Kim Friedman) in this important organizational transition. He is a Certified teacher from Rapid City, South Dakota, USA, and was the impetus behind saving Anusara yoga! He co-founded First Principle Inc. and set in motion all that needed to be accomplished to start the Anusara School of Hatha Yoga. He has played a critical leadership role in the School and has been instrumental in its growth. Previously, Doc was in the Air Force where he managed multi-million dollar budgets. He has a degree in human resources management.
ROMINA SCHLENDER SESE’ is a student in teacher training from Buenos Aires, Argentina. For more than 20 years, she has been working for the same company as Executive Assistant and Office Manager and has learned how to resolve conflicts in both human resources and finance. One of her nominators said, “She is a dedicated student to Anusara, is professional and has a clear heart and mind.”
CHAYA SPENCER began studying yoga and Tantric philosophy and spiritual teaching traveling throughout India from ages 14 to 17. She lived in an ashram, where she was the International Affairs Department Head, marketing the ashram’s publications worldwide. She is a Certified teacher and owns a yoga studio in New Jersey, USA where she has gained experience in human resources and financial management. In her application, she wrote “My commitment to Anusara yoga has held steady through all the various transitions Anusara has gone through, and I am so grateful to all those who have offered their time, service, wisdom and patience and view of something bigger and better. I have personally benefited from their work and selfless service, and it seem fitting that I offer my time, energy and skills to continuing that work. ASHY has become an organization I can not only stand with, but one I would like to support.”
KEVIN TAPLIN is in the process of becoming an Anusara- inspired teacher in Rugeley, Staffordshire, United Kingdom. He brings extensive financial management expertise as a Senior Manager within the Finance Department of the Staffordshire Police Force in the UK, where he also develops policies and manages conflict. As a former Regional Officer for the British Wheel of Yoga, he has experience in governance.
LETIZZIA WASTAVINO is an Anusara-inspired teacher born in Chile, currently living in Vienna, Austria, where she is the Austria country coordinator for ASHY. She speaks English, Spanish and a little bit of German and has lived in four countries. She has fundraising and financial management experiences on a Board of Directors for a kindergarten. As a co-owner of a wellness studio, she has expertise in marketing and public relations.
ALTERNATE: A student in teacher training, KAREN ROJECK of Buenos Aires, Argentina, writes, “I love Anusara and I feel so grateful. The teachings changed my life, so I want to return to the school a little bit of everything it gave me.” She has studied engineering systems and is adept at project management. She also loves art, magic and creating new ideas.
