Meet Our Mentor – Rachel Dewan

We chatted with our mentor Rachel Dewan about her experience with Anusara and why she decided to become an Anusara mentor!

Tell us about yourself.

Rachel Dewan, an Experienced Certified Anusara Teacher (ECAT), has been teaching yoga for almost 20 years. She teaches weekly public and private classes as well as workshops, Immersions, Teacher Trainings and retreats. When she is not teaching or practicing yoga, you can find her rock climbing, running, or on the sidelines of a soccer game watching one of her 3 sons play.

Why did you choose to become a mentor?

I love to geek out with other yoga teachers about poses, philosophy, anatomy…pretty much anything having to do with the science and art of yoga. I love to work collaboratively and engage in deep and meaningful conversations with others. Ultimately I am a seeker, and I love to learn. Teaching teachers allows me to do all of those things!

Tell us about your session. What is it about? What will teachers learn?

Over the last 20 years of teaching, I have come to value the process of teaching more than any particular outcome.  Everything in life is in a state of process. When we can tap into our innate creativity, class planning becomes a beautiful unfolding rather than a chore of ticking off required boxes. In this session, we will work on a “reverse engineering” process of building a class using various inquiries related to all aspects of an Anusara practice: self-study; theme and heart quality; supporting philosophy; peak pose sequencing; and creative and inspiring language.  We will contemplate, journal and discuss all of these together in large and small groups.

Do you have an inspiring message for our students and members?

I hope you will join me and our greater kula for a morning of refining and developing our approach to class planning so we might better serve our students.
